'LOKE THYE KEE ', located at the junction of Burma Road and Penang Road, George Town, is one of Penang's oldest restaurants. The 83-year old building which used to be a very populat restaurant among the senior generation group in the 1970s, was abandoned and left in a dilapidated condition due to escalating rental rates after the Rent Control Act of 2000 was enforced.

Extensive restoration work on the heritage pre-war structure started in December 2011 and was completed in September 2012, maintaining the the essence of the original structure and fixtures by sourcing for materials that can match closely with the original architectural design and heritage style.

The name Loke Thye Kee is a heritage brand name and carried the meaning for 'House of Happiness' according to consultation with a geomancer. The first floor will be dedicated to Hainanese and fusion food and beverage outlets while the second floor will likely be a lounge. Retail outlets are in plans for setting up to sell items like traditional foodstuff on the ground floor.

Lok Thye Kee used to a favorite match-making venue where candidates of arranged marriages would come here for discreet viewing. The results of the suitor view would be tactfully shown by the manner in which the tea was taken after viewing. The restaurant had also catered for many happy occasions especially wedding banquets and engagement parities. And also a lodging accommodation place of visitors from Hainan.
