GeorgeTown Heritage Festival Events Focus On The

UNESCO World Heritage Site

The George Town Festival is a month-long festive celebration for George Town since being listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Listing on 7th July, 2008. The Festival, which is scheduled to be held annually, is a feast of theatre, music, dance, film, art, opera, food, fashion, photography, and inspirational talks. The theme of celebration will focus on the criteria of tangible and intangible heritage, multi-ethnic culture and architectural landscape. The Festival will provide a platform to promote arts and culture, and to engage all stakeholders to work collectively to promote Penang as a selected destination for tourism. The Festival acts as a catalyst to raise public interest in art and heritage education, and encourage cultural exchange and dialogue.  Mutual understanding between urban communities of the past and present will be enhanced through awareness and participation during the festival.

George Town Festival features programmes to promote arts and heritage in Penang, through joint efforts and support from Penang State Government, Municipal Council of Penang Island, George Town World Heritage Incorporated, Penang Global Tourism and the various communities of Penang.

Public, professionals and academic institutions have been invited to participate and contribute to its hands-on workshops, talks, seminars, research activities and cultural initiatives. The annual festival event is expected to attract  more audiences and tourists from all over the world to the showcase of unique diversity of heritage and culture in George Town city.
