The Car Free Day will take place every Sunday at certain stretches of roads in Georgetown city. Motorised vehicles, including motorcycles, are not allowed to enter the Car Free Zone from 7am to 5pm.

Beach Street (Lebuh Pantai) will be off limits to motor vehicles from the China Street junction to the Union Street junction, while both Bishop Street and Church Street will be closed from the Beach Street junction to the Penang Street junction. The whole of Church Street Ghaut will be closed.

The road names mentioned above are located within the zone of Georgetown UNESCO Heritage Site. Hence, it will be so nice to stroll along in leisure while visiting the heritage buildings within the inner city area. During the weekdays, all these roads are highly congested with traffic this region is the banking and heritage commercial centre in GeorgeTown.

THE usually busy and bustling Beach Street in Penang was a scene of tranquillity when cars were prohibited from entry in conjunction with Car Free Day. Those who are inclined towards a more relaxing activity will now have the opportunity to swarm onto the usual car-infested road. They can now stroll around leisurely or ride their bicycle without the fear of being knocked down.

Penang is the first state in Malaysia to have a Car Free Day in Georgetown city every Sunday, this being another milestone effort of the state government to go green and fight climate change.
